Halloween 2026 movies in theaters

Our pick: Hope, by Na Hong-jin

In theaters October 28 · 2h37 · Rated 12+ · Universal Pictures · Competition, Cannes 2026

Near the Demilitarized Zone, the village of Hope is cut off from the world: reinforcements are battling forest fires and communications go dead. Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) protect an aging population, while Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) heads into the mountains to track what everyone takes for a tiger. The hunters soon become the hunted.

Ten years after The Wailing, Na Hong-jin delivers the wildest film of the Cannes competition, where crime thriller, sci-fi, horror and comedy collide with infectious glee. A precision-tuned first hour, tension that builds to the final shot, and some of the most impressive action of his career. Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Taylor Russell round out the cast. The film split the Croisette, and we count ourselves among the converts. For Halloween, the perfect screening, on the biggest screen you can find.

Sanguine, by Marion Le Corroller

In theaters October 28 · 1h43 · Rated 16+ · ARP Sélection · Midnight Screening, Cannes 2026

Margot (Mara Taquin) starts her residency in the ER and struggles to keep pace. Her patients, all her age, show unexplained symptoms, and her own body begins to change. Marion Le Corroller’s first feature turns burnout among young workers into body horror. It split the Croisette: some invoked Julia Ducournau and Coralie Fargeat, others left unconvinced. Karin Viard and Kim Higelin co-star. The most extreme film in this selection.

Clayface, by James Watkins

In theaters since October 21 · 1h49 · Rated 12+ with a warning · Warner Bros. France

Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a rising movie star raised in Gotham’s slums, is left disfigured by a mob boss’s revenge. Scientist Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie) offers an experimental serum that slowly turns him into a monster. The director of Eden Lake and Speak No Evil trades the superhero formula for body horror, built on a story by Mike Flanagan and compared to David Cronenberg. No Batman knowledge required. With Eddie Marsan and Max Minghella.

Other Mommy (Malfaisante), by Rob Savage

In theaters since October 14 · 1h33 · Universal Pictures

Eight-year-old Bela claims a presence from her closet comes to visit. This “Other Mommy” gradually takes on her mother’s features. Jessica Chastain plays both roles in this James Wan production adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, with Jay Duplass and Dichen Lachman. An efficient jump-scare machine, powered by a chilling Jessica Chastain.

Resident Evil, by Zach Cregger

Still in theaters · Metropolitan FilmExport

The director of Barbarian and Weapons crafts an original story in the Capcom universe: a medical courier (Austin Abrams) plunges into a world sliding into chaos. With Paul Walter Hauser and Zach Cherry. Over 940,000 admissions in France.

The year’s horror hits on demand

On demand · Rated 16+ · Rental €4.99 on Canal VOD, Pathé Home and ARTE VOD, €5.99 on Apple TV

Backrooms, by Kane Parsons

On demand · 1h51 · Rated 12+ with a warning · Purchase €11.99 on Canal VOD, Apple TV, Pathé Home and Rakuten TV

A strange door appears in the basement of a furniture store. Adapted from its director’s web series, the A24 film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass. Over 1.4 million admissions in France and the studio’s biggest worldwide hit.
