Tel Aviv, 1987. Twelve-year-old Boaz idolizes his father Meir. As his bar mitzvah approaches, he discovers his father’s homosexuality, at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Nine years later, now an openly homophobic young man, he sets out to find him. After Karaoke, Moshe Rosenthal delivers a deeply delicate family drama about fatherhood, masculinity and silence, led by Yair Mazor, Ido Tako and Assi Cohen. After its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the film won ten Ophir Awards, including Best Film, and is Israel’s submission for the 2027 Oscars.

This screening carries special weight. In 2024, podcaster Julia Layani, a jury member, was targeted by an open letter demanding her removal. She could not join the others on stage at the closing ceremony: she had asked that the peace statement read there mention the Israeli hostages held by Hamas. This year, after a queer festival in Geneva dropped the film in October, Chéries-Chéris welcomes it in Paris.
