Fremont, Babak Jalali
With Anaita Wali Zada, Jeremy Allen White, Gregg Turkington
SYNOPSIS
Donya, a 20-year-old Afghan refugee, works for a fortune cookie factory in San Francisco.
A former translator for the US army in Afghanistan, she has trouble sleeping and feels lonely.
Her routine is disrupted when her boss entrusts her with writing messages and predictions. Her desire is awakened and she decides to send a special message in one of the cookies, letting fate take its course.
Yes or no ?
Yes !
Fremont is a town on the outskirts of San Francisco where many Afghan refugees live.
Donya arrived some time ago and is looking for an appointment with a psychiatrist, insomniac and traumatized by a feeling of guilt at having managed to leave her country while her family is still living there, threatened.
A worker in a Fortune Cookies factory, she makes friends with Joanna, a woman obsessed with the idea of meeting her soulmate.
Filmed with love, Fremont speaks to us of solitude and the simple desires of human beings. The sometimes absurd dialogue is often very funny. The atmosphere is both melancholy and gentle.
And the secondary characters, such as the restaurant owner and the psychiatrist, are all endearing. Fremont’s cast is a mix of professionals and non-professionals.
Babak Jalali and co-writer Carolina Cavalli have succeeded in giving a different image of these women, who are often portrayed as victims but rarely as actors in their own destiny.
“Fortune cookies. These messages are never emphatic, they don’t promise you that you’re going to win a million, they simply give you a line of questioning, a small ray of hope, they make you glimpse the possibility of possibilities.” Babak Jalali (excerpt from press kit)
The aesthetics – the film is shot in 4/3, in fixed shots and in black and white – are a marvel.
If the film recalls the works of Aki Kaurismaki or the early films of Jim Jarmusch, two directors that Babak Jalali is very fond of, Fremont is inspired by the little-known Iranian director Sohrab Shahid Saless. Sohrab Shahid Saless made two films in Iran in the 1970s, Still Life and A Simple Event, two of his favorites.
The film is dedicated to the cause of Iranian women.
A must-see. Now in theater.

Synopsis
Amanda and Clay rent a house in a remote part of Long Island for a peaceful vacation with their two children. One evening, the owners, Ruth and G. H., return in a hurry, claiming that a power cut has paralyzed the surrounding area. Without telephone, television or Internet, the tenants are left in a state of uncertainty. Can they really trust their hosts?
Yes or No?
Maybe!
Produced by the Obama couple, this post-apocalyptic psychological thriller raises many questions about screens, our relationship with people and nature
When the couple Amanda and Clay (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) have to decide whether to let the owners of their rented house, G. H and his daughter Ruth (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold, seen in the Industry series and currently starring in Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money ( I, Tonya), into their home, it’s all about racism.
Soon, whites and blacks alike are subjected to the same attack, a cyber attack that disrupts screens, electricity, all means of communication, transportation and animal migration.
A bit like Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, the animals appear unexpectedly in groups. Amanda’s 12-year-old daughter Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), dreaming of watching the latest episode of Friends, sees hundreds of deer and hinds appear in the garden.
Her brother Archie (Charlie Evans) has a mysterious illness that a survivalist, Danny, played by Kevin Bacon, could save…
Fascinating enough, we can well imagine a sequel to this film, which leaves us a little hungry for more. But the acting is a treat, and for that reason alone, don’t miss it.
Currently on Netflix.
