ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT  FILMS & SERIES IN THEATERS & AT HOME

Abysses, Frank Doelger

Synopsis

All over the world, marine animals are suddenly attacking humans.

Scientists from several countries realize that an unknown intelligence is probably coordinating these attacks and threatening all humanity. They set off on an expedition to confront it.

The fate of the world’s population is in their hands.

Review

At a time when climate forecasts are increasingly catastrophic, this series is right up there with the times.

Spectacular, dramatic, the episodes flow easily, and I confess I binge-watched the series in one sitting.

Based on the international bestseller of the same name by Frank Schätzing, “Abysses” tackles the subject of oceans threatened by pollution and global warming. Strange phenomena are taking place, a kind of revenge on nature.

But nature is already taking its revenge.

Disasters are happening all over the world, but nothing changes. The series doesn’t show this, but humanizes the ocean, and in an optimistic mood, leaves us the choice of negotiating with its creatures.

While the series succeeds in terms of its rythm, special effects and acting (an international co-production produced by Frank Doelger – “Game of Thrones”), something’s missing, es^ which drags on a little and could have been stronger.

No Sex, Didier Cros

Synopsis

Whether voluntary or involuntary, abstinence in our hypersexualized societies is both incomprehensible and embarrassing.

Men and women, in couples or single, testify.

Never in the history of the Western world has sex been so freely experienced and practiced.

But a taboo remains: what about those who don’t have, or no longer have, carnal relations? How do they cope? With frankness and often emotion, seven men and women talk about the reasons behind their abstinence, whether voluntary or involuntary, the way they live with it and the reflections it inspires in them.

These powerful testimonies question our identity, our deepest desires and the weight of social injunctions, which make sexual activity both the norm and the key to a successful existence.

Review

I don’t really have any critic.

In a documentary, you have to make choices, and the ones made by the director allow us to think that, fortunately, whatever we are going through, and especially in terms of intimacy,  rarely addressed in documentaries, we are not alone.

All the testimonies reflect our times, when solitude is rising, dating web sites proliferate but not necessarily generate happiness, and the quest for love and happiness at any price, which are current injunctions, often do more harm than good.

This fascinating and moving documentary is currently available on the Arte.tv platform.

Deadloch, Kate McCartney & Kate McLennan

Synopsis

Two very different women detectives are brought together to solve the murder of a local man in the quiet seaside hamlet of Deadloch.

Review

The detective story is special in that it allows us to use all the tonalities of the film register, from science fiction to drama.

In the Deadloch series, the directors use comedy to tell their story, which is basically a pretext for talking about women, their place in the police force and the prejudices they face, even among themselves.

The dialogue is hilarious, and the two directors have managed to endear all their characters, even the stupid ones.

This series is a treat whether you’re in the mood or not, so you can go with confidence.

Available on Amazon Prime Video, 3 episodes online, one episode every Thursday (8).

With Kate Box (Dulcie Collins), Madeleine Sami (Eddie Redcliffe).
