The Measured Man
On TV: Friday, October 4 at 8:55 PM
Through the perspective of a young ethnologist with questionable ethics, this fiction tackles the genocide committed at the turn of the 20th century by the German Empire in its South-West African colonies.
Set in 1896 Berlin, Alexander Hoffman, an idealistic young doctoral student, is shocked by a colonial exhibition featuring “human specimens” from the South-West African colonies. His encounter with Kezia, a young Herero interpreter, leads him to question the validity of craniometry—the measurement of skulls—one of the bases of racist theories at the time. Years later, as part of a scientific expedition to collect artifacts for German museums, Hoffman witnesses firsthand the extermination war against the Herero and Nama people.
A story rooted in one of the least known yet most horrific chapters of colonial history, The Measured Man delves into the genocides committed between 1904 and 1908 by German forces in present-day Namibia.
