Review
Some are born immensely wealthy, some struggle within the system, and others remain invisible to society. Souleymane belongs to the latter category. Undocumented, he has no legal existence. Yet he is very much alive, though trapped in a daily hell: the plight of undocumented workers.
In a similar vein to À Plein Temps, where Laure Calamy races against time to survive as a single mother, Boris Lojkine captures the relentless struggle of Souleymane, portrayed by Abou Sangaré, an undocumented UberEats delivery driver. The camera never leaves him, echoing his reality—bound to the streets, to endless orders, and to a merciless system.
From dawn to 10 p.m., Souleymane cycles through an unforgiving urban jungle, his only nighttime respite found in a precarious spot arranged through emergency shelter services.
Beneath his weary exterior, we see a man torn between survival and dignity. Souleymane rents his UberEats account from Emmanuel, a trafficker in a well-oiled chain exploiting society’s most vulnerable.
Each scene keeps us on edge for this man who left Guinea to support his ailing mother, only to end up in an inescapable spiral. In true form, Lojkine confronts viewers, asking, “Who hasn’t ordered from UberEats without a second thought for those delivering it?” And after this film, how many will think twice before doing so?
Beyond exposing human exploitation, the film pays homage to social workers fighting to bring a glimmer of normalcy to these precarious lives. L’Histoire de Souleymane introduces a new cinema star, presently awaiting word on his potential deportation, and raises questions that compel us to reconsider our modern comforts. Just how far are we willing to go to preserve our daily ease?
Now playing in theaters.
Monsieur Aznavour
To watch in November.
October 23, 2024 | 2h 13min | Biopic, Musical
Directed by Mehdi Idir, Grand Corps Malade
Starring Tahar Rahim, Bastien Bouillon, Marie-Julie Baup
The son of refugees, small and poor, with a veiled voice, many said he had no chance of success. But through hard work, perseverance, and extraordinary willpower, Charles Aznavour became a monument of French chanson and a symbol of French culture.
Review
This year marks the centenary of Charles Aznavour, the French music legend who passed away at 94. Aznavour, an international star, left an impressive legacy: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a career that rivaled Frank Sinatra’s, sharing the same stage and prestige.
With over 180 million albums sold and 1,200 songs, Aznavour embodies a determined artist deeply connected to his Armenian heritage. This cultural connection fueled his resilience and ambition, even at the peak of his fame.
The biopic, directed by Grand Corps Malade and Mehdi Idir, explores his extraordinary career, breaking stereotypes through the remarkable performance of Tahar Rahim. Known for his role in A Prophet by Jacques Audiard, Rahim—twice César-nominated—inhabits Aznavour with rare intensity, undergoing a rigorous regime of eight hours of singing and five hours of piano weekly to embody the artist.
Guided by Edith Piaf, who famously nicknamed him the “idiot genius” and discouraged him from singing, Aznavour persevered despite doubts around him. This mentorship forged his ambition to accomplish it all and prove he could captivate audiences in any language.
Alongside songwriting credits for Johnny Hallyday and collaborations with icons like Joe Dassin and Bob Dylan, Aznavour made his mark in acting, appearing in 63 films, including Shoot the Piano Player by François Truffaut.
In 1972, he became one of the first artists to address homosexuality openly and sensitively, leaving a legacy of rare and inspiring commitment in French chanson.
The biopic also reveals a lesser-known chapter of his life: during World War II, the Aznavour family hid Jews and Armenians in their Paris apartment, including the communist resistance couple Mélinée and Missak Manouchian. For this courageous act, Aznavour received the Raoul Wallenberg medal in 2017, an Israeli honor that recognized his bravery and deep human values.
Reflecting on his role, Tahar Rahim shared, “I was fortunate that the family welcomed us and supported the film. They knew it would portray both his bright sides and darker moments. I was able to speak with his three children, his wife, and his daughter, which helped me build an intimate portrayal of Charles,” Rahim told the press.
In an excerpt from Le Point: “We (Tahar Rahim and the directors) worked through the script line by line until the final version. Eventually, I asked permission to share parts of the script with a psychologist friend for insights, something I had done with previous roles. The result was fascinating, almost as if the character himself were a patient. Fabien and Mehdi did the same with the entire script, helping us define the story and Aznavour’s psychology.”
A must-see! Now in theaters.

“You Will Not Have My Hate,” from November 8th
After losing his wife in the November 13, 2015, attacks, a young man writes a powerful text that will resonate worldwide… Featuring Pierre Deladonchamps and Camélia Jordana, this is an emotional adaptation of Antoine Leiris’s autobiographical novel.
On November 13, 2015, Antoine Leiris’s world crumbles: Islamist terrorists kill 90 people attending a concert at the Bataclan in Paris. His wife, Hélène, is among the victims. Now, the cultural journalist finds himself alone with his three-year-old son, Melvil. While the thought of a world without her is unbearable, just days after the tragedy, he pens an open letter on Facebook to his wife’s killers, which soon goes viral…
National Mourning
“Friday night, you stole the life of an exceptional person, the love of my life, the mother of my son, but you will not have my hate.” Devastated by grief, Antoine Leiris somehow finds the strength to write this profound expression of the soul. Hatred, he believes, is deeply personal, and he refuses to give even a sliver of it to the Daesh attackers, whose goal was precisely to provoke a destructive, visceral reaction within French society. His words are shared and heard around the world; Le Monde publishes the letter on its front page.
In adapting the eponymous autobiographical account published in 2016 by Antoine Leiris, Kilian Riedhof narrates, with deep emotion, the thirteen days following Hélène’s death, portrayed by Camélia Jordana. Now alone with his young son, Antoine, played by Pierre Deladonchamps, must learn to live again. This challenge becomes all the more daunting as he finds himself, unwillingly, at the forefront of a nation’s collective mourning…
