ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT  FILMS & SERIES

My weekly recommandations!

Festival:

The series I recommend:

The Expats, Lulu Wang,

A series beautifully led by Nicole Kidman, exploring the experience of being a woman, a mother, and the pain of losing a child in the context of expatriate women in Hong Kong. Created by Lulu Wang, adapted from the book by Janice Y. K. Lee.

Starring Ji-young Yoo, Jack Huston, Sarayu Blue, Brian Tee, Flora Chan, and Alex Weston.

Criminal Record, Paul Rutman

Created by Paul Rutman, starring Peter Capaldi, Cush Jumbo, Aysha Kala, and Dionne Brown. An anonymous tip leads two brilliant detectives into a confrontation over an old murder case. One is a young woman at the beginning of her career, the other is a well-placed man determined to protect his legacy.

A policewoman takes over an investigation led by a white policeman with questionable methods. She must confront the racism prevalent in the police force and fight to assert her convictions in her mixed-race relationship.

ON APPLE TV & CANAL +

True Detective, Night Country, Issa Lopez

Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro investigate the disappearance of six men working at the Tsalal Arctic research station, where the night can last over 24 hours.

In the mining town of Ennis, Alaska, there’s an Arctic research station. One day, its eight scientists vanish, leaving behind their still-warm sandwiches on their plates. The only clue is a human tongue lying on the floor. This organ leads the local police chief, Liz Danvers, to link it to the murder, years ago, of an Inuit midwife and environmental activist. Is it the same killer striking again?

Once again, two strong women investigating in Alaska. Between violence against indigenous women and magic, this series is both captivating and terrifying, carried by two sensational actresses, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

Film

The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer

Similar to Robert Merle’s book “Death Is My Trade,” Jonathan Glazer focuses on the executioners to talk about the Holocaust, perhaps why the film has been so successful, tapping into the unfortunately voyeuristic aspect of the audience.

Hopefully, they will come out changed. Terrifying, almost like a work of art, this film grabs you from the first minutes with an exceptional soundtrack and doesn’t let go for several days.
