Women Make Waves International Film Festival
Created in 1993, the Women Make Waves International Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary in France, the cradle of cinema and feminism, at the Forum des images from September 19 to October 8!
30 women directors from different generations are in the spotlight, with fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films.
At a time when the international situation remains tense and Taiwan’s place is more crucial than ever in the global geopolitical balance, it’s the perfect time to present the diversity of its faces through 30 films directed by women.
Untold Herstory by Zero CHOU
Taiwanese women make waves. Closing film.
In the presence of Jane YU, festival coordinator.
With Pei-Jen Yu, Cindy Yu-Han Lien
Synopsis
In 1953, young Kyoko, a gifted drawing student, is sent to Ludao for re-education.
This island, 33 kilometers from Taiwan, was a penal colony from the 40s to the 80s. When the authorities decide on even more draconian methods, the young woman joins forces with other inmates.
Review
Based on Cao Qinrong’s novel “Liumagou No. 15: Green Island Girls Team and others” written in 2012, “Untold Herstory” tells the story of five women who lived through the hell of the infamous “re-education camp”.
Green Island was a taboo for a very long time; survivors were treated with contempt and even spied on by the government long after their release, even after the end of the White Terror period instituted by Chiang Kai Chek.
As one of them was executed while serving her sentence, the book is based on interviews with the survivors, their personal letters and official documents from the period.
Borrowing the ideas and details described in the book, Chou has created her own story with different characters who bear similarities to the survivors, but who are fictional.
While the actresses are all brilliant, the direction, despite some moving scenes, is a little too melodramatic and the film, alas, a little too long.
But it does have the merit of paying tribute to these heroines of history, long forgotten and unknown to the Western world.
Bernadette, Léa Domenach
Synopsis
When she arrives at the Elysée Palace, Bernadette Chirac expects to finally get the place she deserves, having always worked in her husband’s shadow to make him president. Shunned as being too old-fashioned, Bernadette decided to take her revenge by becoming a major media figure.
“BERNADETTE is a comedy about the revenge of a woman who, for too long confined to the role of wife and mother, decides one day to take her destiny into her own hands. And who better to play the last Queen of France than Catherine Deneuve?
Review
The film’s opening recalls Benedikt Erlingsson’s Woman at War.
Basically, Bernadette is a woman who goes to war, a war of attrition to take the place she deserves.
Léa Domenach pays tribute to this woman who resembles many of our mothers, strong women forced to keep quiet, raised in the cult of patriarchy and who take years to realize their worth – when they do – and make themselves heard.
Well-written and well-acted, this fictional comedy tackles a number of topical issues – in addition to women’s place in society and equal rights – such as the rise of the Front National, eating disorders and mother-daughter relationships.
The director revisits a whole chapter of French political history, which seems very far from now.
Catherine Deneuve is terrific in this first feature, and the actors who surround her – Denis Podalydès, Michel Vuillermoz and Sara Giraudeau – all contribute to this success.
Script written with Clémence Dargent, who worked on the O.V.N.I series(a must-see on Canal +).
Starring Catherine Deneuve, Denis Podalydès, Michel Vuillermoz,Sara Giraudeau, Laurent Stocker, François Vincentelli, Lionel Abelanski.
A must-see. In cinemas now.
